Subfamily Calocteninae

The subfamily Calocteninae to date comprises the Neotropical genera Caloctenus, Gephyroctenus and Toca. Calocteninae sensu lato (Silva Dávila 2003, 2004) are characterized by sets of elongated spines on tibiae and metatarsi of the first and second pairs of legs, thickened and elongated anal setae and reduced number of cylindrical gland spigots at the posterior median spinnerets (Silva Dávila 2003). The three Neotropical genera all present dorsal scales on the abdomen. Most species seem to have a narrow distribution within the Amazonian basin or the Brazilian Atlantic forests (Polotow & Brescovit 2008, 2009).
